If you’ve ever tried store-bought Magic Shell, you know how fun it is to squeeze the chocolate sauce onto your ice cream and watch it harden. And the best part is the crackling sound it makes when you break the shell with your spoon. The ingredients included in the store-bought version leaves a lot to be desired. I’d feel much better if I could pronounce the stuff used to make this product! I recently discovered that there is a super simple recipe that you can make at home, which includes just a couple of simple ingredients, plus is also kind of good for you! The magic ingredient in “magic shell” ice cream is the coconut oil (coconut oil turns solid at 76 degrees). Best of all, it actually tastes better than the store-bought topping because there’s no extra sugar or artificial flavors or preservatives. And in case you’re wondering, it doesn’t taste like coconut.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil
Melt the chocolate in a small metal bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Stir in the coconut oil and heat until dissolved, about 1 minute. Keep the liquid lukewarm until ready to pour over the ice cream. Chocolate will harden into a shell within several seconds when spooned over ice cream.

Alternate idea: Paenut butter magic shell—It’s also super simple and includes only two ingredients:
Over a low flame stir together 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter and 1/4 cup coconut oil. Let mixture cool to lukewarm. Pour over ice cream and let it harden.
