During this super busy time of year, I like to make a Speech Snack that is simple, fun, and filled with multiple opportunities to address speech and language concepts.
To make Reindeer Sandwiches you will need:
- heart-shaped cookie cutters,
- plates,
- plastic knives for cutting and spreading,
- thinly sliced bread,
- a variety of fillings of your choice: peanut butter, other nut butter/sun butter (please check for peanut/other allergies prior to this activity),
- Nutella,
- jelly or jam,
- thinly sliced cheese,
- pretzel twists,
- M&M’s, Skittles or other round candies or dried fruit (raisins, craisins)
The goal of this activity is to follow the directions for sequencing the steps, recalling and writing about it at the end of the activity, describing the various ingredients (what does it look like, taste like, smell like, feel like). If you have time at the end of the project, or as a follow-up activity for your next session, have a discussion about reindeer: Where they live, what they eat, their size, their antlers (and how they shed the “felt” that covers them), and the differences between reindeer and caribou. Look up some of this information in advance and have your laptop open to the tabs.
We used heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out two pieces of bread. (Don’t waste the leftover bread! I took it home to feed to the birds.)
My students were given the choice of peanut butter, Sunbutter , Nutella or cheese for their sandwiches.
