Speech Snacks for School: The Juiciest Turkey Ever!

In November we make turkey! I tell my students to let their families know that they learned how to make the juiciest turkey ever in school! It’s the truth—the fruit used to create the turkeys is the secret ingredient!

Each step addresses ways to build language through DESCRIBING, COMPARING, CATEGORIZING, SEQUENCING, DEFINING, and DIRECTION FOLLOWING. (Always check the school policy for having food in the classroom, as well as allergy issues with your school nurse.) so parents can create the project at home with their child–or use it during your session as you make the turkey together in school, or afterward as a review.

You can get creative with the choices, however, you will need fruit that can easily slide onto wooden skewers. Good options include oranges, grapes, pineapple, cherries, bananas. cheese cubes and marshmallows.

Cut a pear in half for the body of the turkey, then decide on a pattern for the turkey feathers. Using 4-5 skewers, slide the fruit on in a sequential order.

You can have your students create an order to their pattern and practice repeating the order as they fill each skewer as a working memory exercise.

Ask student to describe the taste, texture, smell and appearance of the various foods used to create their turkey.

As students work together, they should practice requesting items needed and taking turns conversing/describing the design of their turkey.

Ask students to make up a story about their turkey. (An adventure they went on, where they live, how they escaped the farmer!)

Dried fruits (apricots, cherries, and raisins) were used to create the eyes, wattle, beak and feet. Ask students to compare the differences between dried and fresh fruit. The can describe their finished product with the group/class and

I like to accompany this activity with the book “Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving” by Dav Pilkey. It’s an adorable story with a humorous twist and ties in perfectly with this Speech Snack. The story is filled with many great tier-2 vocabulary words to address with your students.
